A Kripkean Solution to Paradoxes of Denotation
نویسنده
چکیده
Kripke’s solution to the Liar Paradox and other paradoxes of truth (1975) is generalized to the paradoxes of denotation. Berry’s Paradox and Hilbert and Bernays’ Paradox are treated in detail.

Denotation, Paradox and Multiple Meanings∗
In line with the Principle of Uniform Solution, Graham Priest has challenged advocates like myself of the “multiple-meanings” solution to the paradoxes of truth and knowledge, due to the medieval logician Thomas Bradwardine, to extend this account to a similar solution to the paradoxes of denotation, such as Berry’s, König’s and Richard’s. I here rise to this challenge by showing how to adapt B...
متن کاملTarski, Truth, and Semantics
No one denies that Tarski made a major contribution to one particular problem about truth, namely, the resolution of the semantic paradoxes—although, of course, there is disagreement about whether he provided the correct solution. But some philosophers have suggested that Tarski also made a significant contribution to another project, that of providing semantic theories for natural languages. H...
متن کاملThe paradoxes and Russell’s theory of incomplete symbols
Russell claims in his autobiography and elsewhere that he discovered his 1905 theory of descriptions while attempting to solve the logical and semantic paradoxes plaguing his work on the foundations of mathematics. In this paper, I hope to make the connection between his work on the paradoxes and the theory of descriptions and his theory of incomplete symbols generally clearer. In particular, I...
متن کاملTHE MU‘TAZILITE QĀDĪ ‘ABD AL-JABBĀR ON THE DENOTATION OF MIRACLES
This article examines the Mu‘tazilite Qādī ‘Abd al-Jabbār’s views on the denotation of miracles according to his own particular methodology. Despite his acceptance of the celebrated method of the theologians in the denotation of miracles with respect to the authenticity of prophets, i.e., resorting to divine wisdom, Qādī ‘Abd al-Jabbār instead proposed the issue within the structure of conven...
متن کاملNaive Truth and Naive Logical Properties
A unified answer is offered to two distinct fundamental questions: whether a nonclassical solution to the semantic paradoxes should be extended to other apparently similar paradoxes (in particular, to the paradoxes of logical properties) and whether a non-classical logic should be expressed in a non-classical metalanguage. The ∗Earlier versions of the material in this paper have been presented ...
